European Patent Office Design System

In 2020, I joined the European Patent Office (EPO) with the task of creating and evolving their design system from the ground up. At the time, the EPO lacked a cohesive design strategy, resulting in inconsistent user experiences across its various digital platforms. My mission was to establish a unified design approach that would enhance both usability and scalability, transforming the EPO’s digital ecosystem. This would be a significant step in modernizing their digital presence and ensuring consistency across all user interfaces.

The final result has proven a revolutionary change for Wealth and Investment Banking for Barclays…

The first major milestone was the release of the initial version of the design system. This foundational version introduced basic design principles, including a standardized colour palette, typography guidelines, and core UI components. It marked the beginning of a cohesive visual identity for the EPO, providing designers and developers with a clear framework for creating digital products. This first step was crucial in driving alignment across different teams and setting the stage for future enhancements.

Building on this foundation, the second version of the design system brought more advanced tools into play. We developed an extensive UI kit in Figma, allowing designers to prototype and iterate more efficiently while staying aligned with the system’s guidelines. Alongside this, we launched an internal information platform based on Drupal, serving as a central repository for all design-related resources. This platform became a vital tool for promoting the adoption of the design system throughout the organization, ensuring that everyone had access to the same resources and standards.

The third major release of the design system represented a significant leap forward in functionality. We introduced a comprehensive library of React components that mirrored the Figma UI kit, enabling front-end developers to implement the design system seamlessly across different applications and to accurately follow designs. These components were designed to be flexible and modular, ensuring they could be adapted to a wide range of use cases. The React library became a key part of the EPO’s digital infrastructure, driving both efficiency and consistency in the development process.

The widespread adoption of the design system has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. Today, thousands of people globally, including designers, developers, and other stakeholders, rely on the system to create cohesive and user-friendly experiences across the EPO’s platforms. The design system has become a central asset in the EPO’s mission to support innovation, ensuring that users across the world benefit from a consistent and intuitive digital experience.

Reflecting on this journey, I am proud of the impact the design system has had on the EPO’s digital transformation. It has not only improved the efficiency and agility of the organization but has also created a foundation for future growth. This experience has reinforced the power of design systems in driving organizational success and shaping digital experiences. As I move forward in my career, the lessons learned from this project will continue to inform my approach to design and technology.
